How Walmart uses blockchain for food traceability
by Mr. Krishan Tiwari
First and foremost, it is important to know about blockchain:
A distributed, and independent ledger system known as blockchain technology safely tracks transactions on several machines. Although it operates as the base for cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Bitcoin, its uses are not limited to virtual money.
Walmart’s supply chain is more transparent, reliable, and traceable because of blockchain technology. Walmart has the ability to follow food goods’ travel from farm to shop shelves in real time courtesy to this method.
The Issue Prior to blockchain
It could take seven days or longer to track down the cause of spoiled food (for example, during an outbreak of typhoid. Public health hazards, pointless product recalls, and reputational damage resulted from this delayed reaction.
The Blockchain Approach (in partnership with the Food Trust IBM)
Walmart and IBM coordinated to use the IBM Food Trust technology, which is based on Hyperledger Fabric, to deploy a blockchain-based technology food traceability system.
How Data Is Generated at Each Phase:
Data (which includes farm origin, harvest date, processing site, and shipment time) is entered into the blockchain by agriculturalists, machines, sellers, and retailers
Immutable Documents:
Each individual uploads details into the blockchain, which time-stamped and tamper-proofs it.
Absolute Visibility:
It only requires a few seconds for Walmart to track a product from the store to the farm.
Conclusion:
In analysis, it could be gathered that, blockchain has been proven to be a great source of generating proper information, and also make the customers buy products according to their preferences.
