by Mr. Krishan Tiwari

Shefail Jariwala, a renowned celebrity famous for her first chartbuster Bollywood song ‘Kaanta Laga’ was an overnight sensation back in the 20s but who knew that, her success will be so short. Shefali died at a young age of 42 due to cardiac arrest at her apartment, and many claim different things related to her death. Some say, she had low BP which is also found in many young people in India, some claim that she used to take Glutathione drips and medicines without the supervision of doctor but the question still remains a mystery, why younger generation of India is facing so many health issues especially cardiac arrest.

In the past, there were many celebrities who died due to cardiac arrest, and the main reason was over-consumption of supplements to have a “perfect” looking body but eventually those supplements took their life. Our market is filled with such products in the form of tablets, powder, gummy bears, and injections. The younger generation is exposed to too many products, and they wish to try everything to look fair, slim, and younger.

Let’s analyse more factors contributing to cardiac arrest, and other related diseases.

As per the research, cardiac casualty in India occurs under as early as the age of 50. This early outbreak is somehow linked to many factors including genetics, sedentary lifestyle, environmental factors, Poor diet, stress, and lack of exercise. Even at times those who look healthy might also be at risk due to hidden conditions which are yet to be known.

Cardiac arrest- a deadly epidemic in India

Although, age does play a crucial role in CAD and increase the likelihood of this in the individuals but the idea that heart attacks only affect the elderly is a pre-conceived notion, and a challenge to the young individuals who are facing this in their 30s and 40s.

A report released by Apollo Hospital, emphasizes that half of the heart attacks as in 50% of heart attacks in India occur in people below 50 years of age. Even more troublesome, one in four heart attacks affect Indians who are under 40.

Why heart problems are increasing among young individuals?

Dr. Sarita Rao, a senior interventional cardiologist & Director cathlab, Apollo hospital Indore, outlines some genetic and lifestyle ignorance in an Interview with ET panache, and also discusses some factors which might make them looking younger but prone to heart issues. These include:

  • Hypertension and High Cholesterol levels:

Unnoticed high blood pressure, and rise in cholesterol can wear down the walls of arteries leading to difficulty in breathing over the period of time if not treated on time. These conditions show no symptoms at early age but gradually start to affect the body, and weaken it. If you are a food-lover, you must be careful, and mindful about your eating habits.

  • Irregular sleep patterns and psychological strain

Ongoing stress, and irregular or poor quality sleep often create a nervous breakdown affecting the cardiovascular system. Persistent tension can interfere with normal heart rate, and blood flow which might ignite harmful changes in the body.

  • Sedentary lifestyle

It is a no-physical activity lifestyle in simplest terms. In order to have a proper blood flow functioning in our body, it is important to do some physical activity to run the blood flow smoothly but lack of any might deprive the movement a heart needs, and in some cases extra activity might also lead to strain on the heart, and there were many cases in bollywood, where excess workout has been a life taker. Many celebs died instantly right after their intense workout, so be vigilant of both the scenarios.

  • Tobacco use

Be it a conventional smoking or a drug warped in something, both contains harmful chemicals which fasten the accumulation of fatty substance in the blood vessels which clogs the artery, and restrict blood flow greatly affecting the chances of heart disease.

Red flags you mustn’t ignore related to Cardiac arrest
  • Regular chest pain, tightness, and pressure
  • Discomfort and shortness in breathings
  • pain travels to neck, shoulder and back
  • Vomiting
  • Cold sweats in normal weather
